Breast Care

Essential information for prevention and care

What is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is a type of cancer that forms in the tissues of the breast. It is the second most common type of cancer in women, but it can also affect men. Early detection is essential for successful treatment.

Importance of Self-examination

Performing a monthly self-exam can help detect breast changes. Although most lumps are not cancerous, it is important to consult a doctor about any changes.

  • Perform the exam after menstruation
  • Observe changes in shape, size or texture
  • Gently palpate in circular motions
  • Includes the armpit area

Knowing the risk factors can help in prevention and early detection:

  • family history
  • Genetic mutations
  • Personal history of cancer

Modifiable:

  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Obesity
  • alcohol consumption
  • Smoking

Prevention and Healthy Habits

Adopting a healthy lifestyle can significantly reduce your risk:

🥗
Healthy eating: Rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains
⚖️
Healthy weight: Maintain an adequate body mass index
🚭

When to Consult the Doctor

It is important to seek medical attention if you notice any of these symptoms:

  • Lump or thickening in the breast or armpit
  • Change in breast size or shape
  • Nipple discharge (especially bloody)
  • Changes in the skin of the breast
  • Inverted or inward nipple
  • Redness or peeling
  • Persistent breast pain
  • Swelling in part of the breast
